Moritzturm
In 2022, Samuel Nerl and Joshua Weitzel took an in-depth look at the role of Landgrave Moritz “the Scholar.” Although his forced conversion of the Kassel population to Calvinism was a violent act of domination, it also led to the influx of Huguenot refugees several centuries later.
“Moritzturm” is part of a series of performances that deal with biblical and religious themes from an agnostic perspective. The performance consists of three acts: Procession / Initiation / Dismantling.
The procession involves transporting 10 vintage loudspeakers in a handcart across the city to the venue.
The initiation is the main part of the performance and lasts about 40 minutes. While Joshua Weitzel gives a sermon in the role of the pastor (based on classics of sound studies and analog sound synthesis), Samuel Nerl builds a cross about 3 meters high from the loudspeakers.

In der Performance existieren zwei vom Festland abgetrennte Plattformen. Ein gibt ein kleines Boot, das auf die notwendigste Größe reduziert ist. Darauf befindet sich eine Sendeeinheit. Außerdem ist der Funker zugegen und eine Person die als Steuermann für die Fortbewegung des Bootes verantwortlich ist.
Auf der anderen Seite liegt ein Schiff, das ein Kreuzfahrtschiff sein könnte. Unter den Passagieren befindet sich eine Person, die mit einem Radio auftritt.
Auf dem kleinen Boot wird derweil Lyrik eingesprochen, die die eigene Situation thematisiert. Während sich das kleine Boot an das riesige Schiff herantastet, sucht die Person auf dem Schiff die Sender ihres Kurzwellenempfängers ab. Wenn es den Piratensender gefunden hat, versucht sie die Aufmerksamkeit vermehrt auf sich zu lenken, bspw. durch Handzeichen. Nicht zuletzt um die Passagiere des Schiffs zu erreichen.
Das Video zeigt die Performance am 23.09.2022 im Rahmen der Ausstellung „A Many Headed Hydra“ die unter der Kuratierung von Tobias Sauer realisiert und vom Piratenkanal Kassel unter der Leitung von Christoph Neugebauer gestreamt wurde.
